A Word from the Editor and the Publisher

In November, we took the day's first boat to Anacortes. In mid-summer, the ride is lively in sunshine, now it is a pre-dawn ferry, passengers still sleepy. In Rosario Straits we watched the eastern sky lighten as the sun began to rise behind the Cascades; the mostly flat sea lively from a light breeze brushing its surface. The wind and shadows made an ever-changing pattern of irregular ovals. According to Jonathan Rabin in Passage to Juneau this is the underlying pattern of Northwest Indian art and in it we can see the deep connection they had with the sea. The sea was the center of their life; they lived with their backs to the land and the terrors, real and imagined, of its dark forests and cold mountains. Living on an island, with the bright open sea at our doorstep, it has been tempting to keep our backs to the land during the past few months. The sadness of September 11th is still with us and it is hard to think of the future without thinking of the past. And so we remember the heroes of that day as we think how lucky we are to have our family and friends and live where we do.

Around the World in 336 Days

The day after Kate's 25th birthday, she and Austin took off. Backpacks loaded, they traveled for 11 months around the world; hiking, diving, surfing, reading and writing. They made land in Australia, Bali, Thailand, India, Egypt, overland down Africa, and a short stay in Holland before flying back to the West Coast in Mid-November. They worked toward their dive master training and hand-raised a baby bird.

The on-line journal of their travels, and lots more pictures, can be seen at www.tunatravelers.com

They are now busy planning their wedding for August 24, 2002!

Art World turned on its Head!

On a sunny afternoon at Stanford Memorial Church, Judy took to the podium to receive her Masters of Liberal Arts degree for her groundbreaking work "Breaking The Mold: Artistic Experimentation With Sacred and Secular Imagery In Trecento Sienese Maestà Paintings". Judy discovered that art served more than one master - political propaganda for one. Bob threw her a surprise celebration with the best surprise of all - a visit from niece Trish.

Accountant Turns to Art

After three years of eager anticipation, Bob was roasted and toasted by Partners and friends at his retirement dinner. Some said Bob would be "back in the Bay Area" after riding his bicycle a few times around San Juan Island (with views like this!)

but so far retirement has been busier than imagined. He has barely begun on research and study for his writing and he hasn't even started working on his photography!

July 14th

The Princess Bride

A spectacular weekend and Judy's niece Betsy and fiancé Jeff got married. Betsy's mom, Beth, planned the wedding of the year and Betsy and Jeff are as happy as two young newlyweds can possibly be. We wish them loads of happiness and lots of love for the future.

August 2nd

Climbing to the Stars

With seven other students, Bob spent six days learning mountaineering skills on the slopes of Mt Rainier. JJ, Rob and Adam the three guides from Rainier Mountaineering Inc. were outstanding, focusing their efforts on keeping them warm and safe. The group discovered the mountain to be a very alien environment. At night, the winds would blow 40 miles an hour and it was a wonder that the tents didn't become airborne. During the days they had reasonable weather and were able to summit on a clear windless morning. The weather turned almost immediately and they were off the top in 20 minutes. [Click on the image for more pictures.] No problem going up, but Bob spent the next several days recovering from the hike down. His recovery was aided by the arrival of Sam and Trey for the Annual Aunt Judy Boot Camp.

September

Prophets in Tokyo

Jason spent mid-September in Japan helping Prophet Brand Strategies expand, and opening their Tokyo office. Jason is terribly busy on projects with some of our largest consumer companies. He did manage to spend some time on the slopes of Tahoe honing his skiing skills and to spend a two weeks in Thailand with Kate and Austin We look forward to seeing him in Friday Harbor at Christmas.

Our house on Dec 14th

Whales and eagles bless our little cove with their presence and slowly our house is taking shape. We will have lots of room for guests, so book early and book often. We would love to show you our Island and the charms of the Northwest. Until then,

Merry Christmas

And a Joyous New Year!
